War is eternally hungry, and even devours its own dead. In a way, anyway. When any Mech is destroyed, it will leave behind a Wreck -- a ruined shell on the battlefield. Wrecks can then be recycled by nearly any infantry unit in the same manner as picking up a resource stockpile, though some will work faster than others, producing a small amount of Steel and Oil (50 and 12 on Medium difficulty). This can serve as a refund should your own Mechs be destroyed in a fight, or provide you with a small bonus for killing an enemy Mech.

Mech Wrecks exist only to be repurposed in this way; they do not provide cover for infantry or otherwise influence the battlefield (though they can get in the way of building footprints). If any other Mech or Exosuit unit walks over a Wreck, it will be destroyed, removing any chance of gaining resources from it. This will also happen if a Mech is destroyed while too close to a live one, or in a space where the Wreck could not fit -- the dying Mech will seem to explode twice, as the Wreck vanishes before hitting the ground. Explosions (such as artillery strikes) will also destroy Wrecks. Finally, be careful -- any unit that cannot pick things up (such as Mechs, or certain Heroes) will target, attack, and destroy a Wreck if tasked on it.

Destroyed Exosuit units do not create Wrecks; destroyed Airship units, however, do (provided they are over a place where the Wreck can land). All Wrecks provide the same amount of resources regardless of the size or class of the Mech that created them. Players in the Campaign are advised to pick up Wrecks diligently; several bonus objectives depend on collecting Wreck scrap, and the extra resources can be surprisingly important in lean missions. Collecting a Wreck will, however, leave the infantry collecting it completely vulnerable, so be sure there are no threats around before you begin salvage operations.
